ENDURANCE & OUTDOORS / EDUCATION

The demands of the sport
for Hiking.

Climb, descend and carry with confidence.

What the activity actually asks for

Hiking challenges sustained aerobic work, step-ups, descents, uneven ground and sometimes a pack.

Where the gym fits

Step-ups, split squats, calves and carries build the leg and trunk capacity for trails. Physical preparation raises general capacity. Skill and tactics remain specific to the sport.

What to practice separately

Route choice, pacing, footwear and terrain experience matter as much as gym work.

Three movements to understand

These are examples of general physical preparation. Tap any movement for target muscles, setup, execution, common errors and an easier alternative.

Put this into your week

Two leg-focused strength days and one progressively longer hike or walk. Gradually lengthen walks on terrain that reflects your planned hike; keep most efforts conversational.

Begin with a manageable session and record how it affects the next practice. If you can complete every set with sound form and recover well, add a repetition or modest resistance. If quality or recovery falls, reduce a set or move the session away from the hardest sport day.

Route choice, pacing, footwear and terrain experience matter as much as gym work. Long descents can create soreness. Increase elevation and pack load one variable at a time.

Evidence and interpretation

General training evidence informs this guide. The sport-specific exercise choices are coaching applications; training response varies by person and season.

General education. Work within your ability and seek qualified advice for injury, symptoms, contact technique or return to play.
